What to do if my power button is not working?

If your phone’s power button is physically missing, you might be able to get it to work by using a pin or other narrow object to press the switch underneath.

If the button is broken, however, you’ll need to try some other workarounds. For Android phones, try connecting your phone to your PC via the USB cable. If that doesn’t work, try holding down your volume keys and home button (if you have one) for a few seconds. A menu should appear – if it does let go of all the buttons. Use the volume keys to navigate through the options and select restart or turn on. For phones without home buttons, review your device documentation to see power-up options.

For iPhone, all you need to do is plug in your USB cable into your Apple device using any charging device, and your phone should turn on.

All of these are just temporary solutions – ultimately, your power button will likely need fixing. Get a repair booked in with one of our expert Smart Genie technicians today.

How do I know if my phone battery needs replacing?

Batteries have a natural lifespan and will wear out over time. Batteries tend to give warning signs when they are close to wearing out. For example, you may notice your battery used to go down to 50% after a day of use, but now it goes down to 20% during the same amount of time. this is a sign your battery may need replacing soon. Another warning sign is your phone not charging completely regardless of how long you leave it charging. This is because the materials within the battery have been degraded over time and this is now affecting the performance. One last major sign is if your phone is constantly really hot on or off the charger.

If you see any of these signs, we suggest taking your device to a professional technician to have a look at it. A worn-out battery will compromise the performance and can even result in damage to the phone itself, so it’s best to get it replaced. Book your phone in for a postal repair today.

Why is my phone battery draining so quickly?

If you find your phone battery is draining quickly, there are a number of reasons why this can happen. Background processes, ‘always on’ connectivity, RAM heavy tasks and screen brightness can all increase battery drain. Here are some simple steps you can take to try and address the problem.

For Android phones:

Close apps you aren’t using. How you do this will vary by phone model, but find your Recent Apps view and swipe to close the apps you don’t need.

Turn off unnecessary connectivity. Do you need GPS and Bluetooth on all the time? Do you need both mobile data and WiFi enabled? If you don’t need them on, turn them off. Swipe down from the top of your phone and tap the relevant icons to toggle on or off.

Close unnecessary browser tabs. Having loads of tabs open can drain the battery, so close the tabs you aren’t using. How you do this will vary by browser, so check their help info if you’re having issues.

Allow your screen to turn off when you’re not using it. Go into your phone settings, then tap Display > Advanced > Sleep. Pick a timeout duration – we suggest 30 secs or lower for maximum battery efficiency.

Reduce screen brightness. Swipe down from the top of your phone then swipe the slider for the brightness to the left. Don’t turn it down completely or your phone won’t be usable outdoors/in sunlight. For maximum control, you may need to disable automatic, adaptive brightness.

Optimise app battery usage. Open phone settings and tap Apps and notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Battery optimisation. From here if an app isn’t already optimised tap it and Optimise > Done.

For iPhones:

Close apps you aren’t using. Double click the Home button to bring up a list of your active apps, and swipe up or down to close the apps you don’t currently need.

Turn off unnecessary connectivity. Do you need GPS and Bluetooth on all the time? Do you need both mobile data and WiFi enabled? If you don’t need them on, turn them off. Swipe up from the bottom of your phone and tap the relevant icons to toggle on or off.

Close unnecessary browser tabs. Having loads of tabs open can drain the battery, so close the tabs you aren’t using. How you do this will vary by browser, so check their help info if you’re having issues.

Optimise mail refresh rates. If you don’t need to see emails the second they land in your inbox, you can save battery by disabling Push Mail and setting up your iPhone to refresh your inbox less frequently. To fix this go to settings > Accounts & Passwords > Fetch New Data > turn off Push. Now, scroll to the bottom and choose every 15 mins (or a time of your choosing) under ‘Fetch’.

Limit background app data usage. Certain apps use your WiFi and mobile data while you’re not using them, and limiting this usage can save a lot of battery. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Tap to toggle off the apps you wish to stop using the battery in the background.

Reduce screen brightness. Swipe up from the bottom of your phone then swipe the slider for the brightness down. Don’t turn it down completely or your phone won’t be usable outdoors/in sunlight. For maximum control, you may need to disable automatic, adaptive brightness.

Ensure Auto-Lock is on. To activate this, go to Settings Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Now select an amount of time your phone will stay on after you’ve used it – lower times for longer battery life.

Turn on optimised battery charging. Optimised charging allows your iPhone to learn your charging habits so it can help save your battery life. To turn this on open Settings and tap Battery > Battery Health. Then turn on ‘Optimise Battery’.

There’s a trade-off between battery life and functionality, so with all of the above, don’t go so overboard that you end up with a phone that doesn’t work properly! Work out what functionality you need and optimise accordingly.

All batteries have a limited lifespan, so if after optimising all of the above you find that your battery life is still poor, then it’s probably time to get a replacement battery. Book a postal repair in with our team today.

Where can I repair my phone battery?

How can I repair my phone battery?

If your phone has battery issues, your options are limited. There are various fixes you will see suggested on different internet sites. The safest of these is to try accessing the battery and ensure the battery connectors and battery compartment are clean, using a microfibre cloth. Even this, however, may not be all that simple – most modern smartphones are difficult to disassemble and you will most likely just end up damaging your phone.

We want to strongly stress that if your battery is physically damaged, you should never attempt to repair this yourself – most batteries contain lithium, a highly reactive and unstable metal.

In most cases, your best bet is to replace the battery. You can attempt this yourself, but be aware that this runs a significant risk of permanently damaging your phone’s fragile internal components. We suggest that you take the phone to a trustworthy phone repair centre, or post it into a Smart Genie repair service for expert, warranty-covered repair.

Can I fix my broken phone on contract without insurance?

If your phone is broken and needs repair, but you don’t have insurance on it, don’t worry! Your phone may still be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. If you would like to check if your phone is covered by a warranty you will need to find the IMEI number, which can usually be found in the ‘About’ section on your phone’s Settings. With this IMEI number, you can check if you are still eligible for a warranty on your manufacturer’s website. If your phone manufacturer doesn’t provide this, try calling up your service provider or go into one of their stores and they can find out that information for you.

In some cases, a warranty may not cover your phone’s damage, particularly for accidental damage. At that point, you’ll need to either try and repair the phone yourself or take it to a phone repair shop or technician. Here at Smart Genie, we repair all devices – our expert phone and tablet repair technicians can carry out any repairs you need, and all your repairs will be covered by our free warranty. How do I repair a broken phone glass?

First of all, assess the damage.

A few cracks and scratches may not stop your phone from working, but any crack, however minor, will likely have an impact on the structural integrity of the phone, making it less resilient to future drops and knocks. Cracks also make it more likely that moisture will get into the phone and damage the internals. A seriously damaged screen may even affect the functionality of the phone.

If the damage is mostly cosmetic and you’re happy to make do and mend, for now, a basic, short-term DIY option is to add a screen protector to your phone to cover the cracks and scratches. This is an inexpensive fix and may help mitigate against water ingress and further damage. This is only a temporary solution, however.

The only permanent fix is to replace the broken screen. Spare parts, phone disassembly kits and instruction videos are available online if you want to attempt this yourself. In general, however, we would strongly advise against this. Modern phones can be very difficult to disassemble and you run a high risk of damaging the fragile structural and electronic components. It’s far too easy to turn your phone into a very expensive paperweight! Any damage you cause yourself will almost certainly not be covered by either your manufacturer’s warranty or your phone insurance.

In most cases, the best option is to have your phone repaired by a professional technician. At Smart Genie, all of our technicians are fully vetted, and any repairs we carry out are covered by a Smart Genie warranty for your peace of mind.

Why have a phone screen protector?

Most phones nowadays are touch screens and completely rely on a touchscreen display and this normally covers the entire front of the phone. Therefore a screen shattering or cracking could be a big issue and can render a phone unusable. For this reason, screen protectors are strongly recommended, as they provide a protective layer on top of your screen that shelters it from scratches and absorbs shock from the impact of it accidentally falling on the floor.

All modern smartphones and tablets use touch screens for the majority of their functionality. Whilst durability has improved, particularly with advancements in technology like the tough Gorilla Glass, phone screens, unfortunately, remain pretty fragile things! A broken screen can render your expensive device unusable.

There are two main types of screen protector: film protectors, and tempered glass protectors. Film protectors protect against scratches and scuffs and are compatible with all phone cases. They don’t offer much protection against knocks or drops, however. A tempered glass protector is designed for additional shock impact protection: if you drop your phone, it will be the screen protector that breaks, not your phone. They aren’t compatible with all phone cases, though, so make sure you check compatibility before you buy one.

Can my phone screen protectors be replaced?

Yes, screen protectors can be replaced. In fact, if they are damaged, then they should be replaced! Tempered glass screen protectors are designed to absorb shock impacts that would otherwise be absorbed by your phone screen, so if your protector is already cracked, it is no longer effective.

You can replace a screen protector yourself, or most mobile phone repair shops will do it for a small fee.

Can my phone screen be fixed?

Most of the time phone screens can be repaired so there’s no need to buy a new phone if you still prefer to use your old phone. Bear in mind though that the cost of a repair will sometimes mean that it makes more financial sense just to get a new phone, particularly for cheaper phones.

Will my phone work with a cracked screen?

You can sometimes continue to use your phone even if the phone has a cracked screen. This, however, depends on how serious the damage is – if you see colours on your screen in and around the cracks or some pixels are not displaying, the LCD beneath the phone has been damaged and the screen will need to be replaced.

Will Samsung replace my phone screen?

Samsung offers repair services for their phone models at Samsung Experience Stores or Authorised Support Centres, but most mobile phone repair shops will be able to repair Samsung phones.

Will a crack in a phone screen spread?

A cracked screen, unfortunately, doesn’t get better after time – it will only get worse unless repaired. Cracks affect the structural integrity of the phone, and if you ignore a crack for too long, it can ultimately lead to the screen shattering.

Will phone insurance cover my cracked screen?

Insurance coverage varies, so whether or not you are covered for broken screens will depend on the level of cover you have selected. Check your policy documents – if your phone insurance includes accidental damage cover, it will most likely cover the cost of repairing your phone screen.

Will tempered glass protect my phone screen?

Tempered glass protectors are more durable and a lot stronger than plastic screen protectors. Like the crumple zone of a car, tempered glass screen protectors are designed to absorb the shock impact of drops and knocks and break instead of your expensive screen! Tempered glass is also very scratch-resistant, so it helps to keep your phone looking in pristine condition.

Will Apple replace my phone screen?

In some cases, your screen damage repair could be covered by AppleCare. The only way to know this is to get it checked by technicians at an Apple store or an Apple authorised service provider. In the event that you are not covered by AppleCare, you can still get it repaired by Apple stores and Apple authorised service providers. Click here for more information. Be warned that the prices can be very steep!

Bear in mind that you don’t have to use only Apple authorised service providers. Most phone repair stores can repair Apple products, frequently for a lower cost. Make sure you pick one that you trust, preferably with a warranty and/or guarantee. Our Smart Genie technicians are highly experienced and all repairs are covered by our Smart Genie warranty.

Will acetone damage my phone screen?

Generally, we don’t recommend using acetone on your phone. Whilst acetone is unlikely to damage a glass screen, it is known to dissolve plastic and could seep through and destroy circuit boards and internal components. This kind of damage will most likely not be covered by either your warranty or phone insurance.

As always, if you’re unsure or inexperienced, the best option is to go to a professional phone repair technician. A DIY option might look cheaper at first glance, but could end up being far more expensive than you bargained for!

Will a cracked phone screen get worse?

A cracked screen, unfortunately, doesn’t get better after time – it will only get worse unless repaired. Cracks affect the structural integrity of the phone, and if you ignore a crack for too long, it can ultimately lead to the screen shattering.

Screen repair vs getting a new phone?

Compare the cost of repairing your phone screen to buying a new phone. Repairing the screen can be costly, especially for newer models, so sometimes buying a new phone might be the better option.

How do I repair my phone LCD?

First of all, assess the damage.

A few cracks and scratches may not stop your phone from working, but any crack, however minor, will likely have an impact on the structural integrity of the phone, making it less resilient to future drops and knocks. Cracks also make it more likely that moisture will get into the phone and damage the internals. A seriously damaged screen may even affect the functionality of the phone.

How do I package the device I want to send for repair?

Packing advice and guidance

1. Choose the right packaging for your items. Boxes made of corrugated cardboard with good quality outer liners, tubes for rolled paper and heavy-duty double-layered board for valuable items.

2. Choose the size of the package according to its content. Under-filled boxes are likely to collapse; overloaded ones may burst.

3. Consider strength, cushioning, and durability when selecting your wrapping supplies.

4. Fill all spaces in your package with a suitable filler such as polystyrene chips or even shredded paper.

5. If you are re-using a box ensure it is in good shape and not worn out. Once a cardboard box is damaged it becomes weaker.

6. Couriers use scanners to read labels so make sure yours are clearly displayed and securely attached, and remember to remove any old labels.

7. Use strong tape to seal and secure your box.

8. Carefully pack fragile or delicate items individually, place on a bed of cushioning, put cushioning all around the sides and place in the centre of your package to minimise the risk of damage.

9. For peace of mind, we recommend you take protection cover for your parcel. On occasion, accidents do happen and we believe it’s best to take protective cover rather than looking back in hindsight.

The advice is for guidance only We Digital Ltd (Smart Genie) can not accept any responsibility for loss or damage as a consequence of the information provided. It is the responsibility of the person(s) sending the parcel to make sure that the items are securely and correctly packaged.

Our Smart Genies have a great success rate with Water-Damaged repairs so you will be in safe hands.

Please note Water-Damage repairs are not included in the Smart 12-Month Warranty.

Will my repair void my manufactures warranty?

In a word yes it will….. Unless the issue has been caused by accidental damage.

If your device is still in warranty and you are experiencing an issue with the way the device is operating, it would be best for you to return your device back to the manufacturer.

However…..

If your device issue has been caused by accidental damage, the repair would not be covered under your warranty, and therefore be subject to the manufacturer repair charges which are usually very expensive. Please check out our repair rates and save yourself some money!
